Bintou tells the story of a 13-year old Francophone African immigrant called Bintou who uses the sexual liberty to control her family, her gang, and everything else that comes into her path. Taking place in the bowels of a rough urban city, the play examines the impact of the Western World on a family still clinging to tradition. With nothing left to do to control their child, Bintou’s family decides to lean on a West African tradition to take the “sting” out of Bintou’s “bite”. Once home Bintou, whose mother is convinced that a demon posses her daughter’s body, must face the “Knife Woman”. The result is a moving conclusion to a story that explores sexuality, the collision of generations and cultures and the rites of passage of female genital mutilation.
